From Research Labs to Operating Rooms: Sustainability Takes Another Step Across Boston Children’s
Sustainability at Boston Children’s Hospital continues to grow beyond any one program, department, or part of the organization.
On August 10, Boston Children’s clinical teams completed a pilot with Polycarbin exploring the diversion of blue wrap, the polypropylene material commonly used to maintain the sterility of surgical instruments and procedure kits before they enter the operating room.
What makes the pilot particularly exciting isn't just the material collected. It's where the idea is taking hold.
Working together, OR Nursing, Surgical Technologists, and Clinical Assistants collected blue wrap from just two primarily orthopedic operating rooms—areas with particularly high use of surgical kits packaged in the material.
The results quickly demonstrated the potential.
During the first month alone, the two rooms diverted approximately 238 pounds of blue wrap. By the conclusion of the pilot, the team estimates that approximately 400 pounds or more may have been collected—all from only two operating rooms.
That small footprint makes the result especially interesting. Rather than beginning with a hospital-wide program, the team started with a focused pilot: identify a high-volume waste stream, test a collection process in the environment where the material is generated, learn what works, and understand what would need to change before considering expansion.
Pilots Are About Learning
The project also identified an important operational challenge.
For the material to be accepted through the current recycling pathway, tape and labels need to be removed from the blue wrap. In a busy clinical environment, adding additional preparation steps can create barriers to participation and make large-scale implementation difficult.
That doesn't make the pilot unsuccessful. That is exactly what pilots are designed to uncover.
The team is now evaluating what a workable collection process could look like while also exploring other potential partners and recycling pathways that may better accommodate the realities of clinical operations.
Sustainability Spreading Across the Hospital
For the Boston Children's Green Labs Program, there is another reason this project is exciting.
Over the past several years, laboratories across Boston Children's have demonstrated how focused pilots can help uncover opportunities to reduce waste, conserve resources, and rethink traditional operating practices. Seeing similar experimentation occurring within clinical spaces represents another step toward something larger: sustainability becoming part of how teams throughout the hospital think about their work.
The solutions will not always be the same.
A research laboratory and an operating room have very different workflows, priorities, safety requirements, materials, and constraints. But the approach can be remarkably similar:
Identify an opportunity. Test it. Measure it. Learn from it. Improve it. Then determine whether it can scale.
Perhaps most importantly, this pilot was driven by the people who understand the work best—the staff working within these clinical environments every day.
Approximately 400 pounds of blue wrap from two operating rooms may represent a relatively small pilot today.
But it also raises an exciting question:
If that's what two operating rooms can accomplish, what might be possible across an entire hospital?
